"Endlich Unterwelt - Anbruch einer neuen Zeit" – "Finally: Underworld – The Dawn of a New Era"

In our beliefs and our thinking, we are largely unaware of how deeply we are trapped in the past, without learning from it. Unconscious beliefs take on a life of their own and exert a disastrous influence over our actions and thoughts. Among other things, they pave the way for the drastic scale of environmental destruction as well as the resurgence of fascism. And instead of finally coming to terms with the contradictions between democracy and capitalism, humanity seems to be losing its mind before our very eyes. We would rather forgo our children’s future than give up the comfort of not having to change ourselves. Yet the plan is not working: the new era is dawning faster than we thought.

Thomas Behling’s works often resemble curious finds from an attic, yet behind the nostalgic familiarity of his pieces lie fakes, shifts and alienations. What looks as though it came from the day before yesterday prompts us to ask what will become of it the day after tomorrow.
